Temple Beth Sholom Requirements and Precautions

for Indoor and Outdoor Services During Covid-19

Below are some of the key precautions that Temple Beth Sholom’s Board of Directors is actively taking to prevent the spread of coronavirus at Temple Beth Sholom. You are kindly requested to follow all of these precautions diligently, to sustain a healthy and safe House of Worship and workplace in this unique environment. It is vital that we all act responsibly and transparently with regard to these health precautions, so that we all remain healthy and Temple Beth Sholom can remain open.

Your Board of Trustees recognizes that there is a risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus when one is with other people. Each of us must evaluate the risk that they want to take by taking into account many factors including, but not limited to, health and medical conditions, age, the prevalence of the coronavirus in the community, the availability of testing and their individual tolerance for risk. If you have doubts, or are unsure, or have medical conditions, consult with your physician. The Board of Trustees strongly recommends that Congregants who are considered high risk (e.g., those who are immunocompromised, have high blood pressure, heart condition or have diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, severe obesity or other medical conditions identified by the CDC, other governmental authorities or your physician) not attend indoor services initially until cleared by your physician. Congregants aged 65 or older should also consider not attending indoor services. (CDC guidelines).

1. Requirements for Entry into the Temple:

  • All Congregants will be required to legibly sign an Attendance Sheet and give their cell phone number.
  • All Congregants must wear masks while on TBS premises and during the entire service.
  • There will be no exceptions. If you do not have a mask, one will be provided to you. Please put your mask on before entering the building.
  • Body temperature of each Congregant will be taken before entry. If your temperature is 100 degrees or higher, you will be politely asked to go home. There will be no exceptions.
  • All congregants must properly sanitize their hands before entering the sanctuary/social hall.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available at the door. Hand sanitizer will also be available in the social hall.

2. Services Precautions

  • There will be no sharing of siddurim or tallitot.
  • For indoor services, rows of seats will be 6 feet apart. Seats will be set up for single congregants, and groups of two and three seats will be set up for families, all 6 feet apart.
  • For families living in the same household that need extra chairs to sit together, additional chairs will be available.
  • For outdoor services, folding chairs will be used, appropriately spaced and then disinfected after services. Congregants will not be permitted to enter the Temple building if services are being held outside.
  • There will be separate sets of books for Friday night services and Saturday morning services, preventing surface transmission of the virus from Friday to Saturday.
  • There will be no processional with the Torah. There will be no handshakes or “elbow bumps.”
  • Congregants will chant the Torah blessings from their seats.
  • Only designated Gabbaim will be able to stand at the Torah during the Torah Reading service.
  • Hagbah and Gelilah to be done by family members only.
  • There will be no Onegs/Kiddushes and no sharing of food or drink

3. General Precautions

  • Disinfectant and anti-bacterial soap will be in each bathroom.
  • Handles, door knobs and surfaces will be wiped with disinfectant after services.
  • Microphones will be wiped down with disinfectant.
  • Precaution signs will posted throughout the Temple.
  • We urge congregants using the bathrooms to wipe down the faucets, etc. before use and when they are done. Disinfectant spray will be available in the bathrooms. If available, disinfectant wipes will be placed near the bathroom entrances.

These guidelines are subject to change with the introduction of additional governmental guidelines. You will be notified of any changes by email as soon as possible.
